If you are an international student who wants to study in the USA, you will probably need a TOEFL score, or an IELTS, B2 First (FCE) or C1 Advanced (CAE) score. The TOEFL iBT is made by ETS in the United States and is built around academic and campus situations, so TOEFL speaking and TOEFL listening are where American English matters most. Two parts of these exams depend directly on pronunciation: listening and speaking. In the listening section, you must understand fast, natural English that you hear only once. In the speaking section, examiners or AI scoring assess how clearly you pronounce sounds, stress, rhythm and intonation. When students develop the whole sound system of American English, sound by sound, they train both skills at the same time. InPronunci, the linguistically structured American Accent Training App created by Prof. Alex, Ph.D. Accent Coach, Doctor of Education, and professional linguist, gives students this complete path.

What InPronunci is

InPronunci is a linguistically structured American Accent Training App: a complete American accent training course developed by Prof. Alex, Ph.D. Accent Coach, Doctor of Education, and professional linguist, based in Austin, Texas. Prof. Alex has more than 20 years of teaching experience and teaches adult ESOL at Austin Community College.

InPronunci is not a pronunciation scoring app. It is a training program. Students learn American sounds step by step, sound by sound, and then use them in real speech: sentences, paragraphs, presentations and conversation. The goal is for students to become independent and confident English speakers.

The problem: listening and speaking in English proficiency exams

Most international students prepare for the TOEFL or IELTS with practice tests, speaking topics and vocabulary lists. These are useful, but they often skip the foundation of both listening and speaking: the sound system of English.

Typical problems international students face:

These are not vocabulary problems. They are sound problems. A student who has never trained the American R, the TH sounds, the flap T, the reduced vowels or sentence stress will have difficulty hearing them in fast speech and producing them clearly in the exam.

What each exam assesses in listening and speaking

Exam Listening Speaking: what pronunciation includes
TOEFL iBT (updated January 2026) The Listening section is adaptive and adjusts to the student’s level (ETS). Students may hear accents from North America, the U.K., New Zealand or Australia (ETS Speaking section) Two tasks: Listen and Repeat (repeat short sentences exactly as you hear them, accurately and intelligibly) and Take an Interview (a simulated academic interview at a natural speaking pace) (ETS Speaking section). The interview is scored for clear, coherent answers with accurate grammar, varied vocabulary and intelligible prosody (TOEFL iBT 2026 specifications)
IELTS (Academic and General Training) Four recordings, heard once only, with British, Australian, New Zealand and North American accents (IELTS Listening format) Pronunciation is one of four equally weighted criteria, with Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy (IELTS scoring in detail). It includes chunking, rhythm, stress timing, linking, elision, intonation, word stress, vowel and consonant production, and the effect of accent on intelligibility (IELTS Speaking key assessment criteria)
B2 First (FCE) and C1 Advanced (CAE) A Listening paper with recordings of different speakers Pronunciation is one of four analytical criteria, with Grammar and Vocabulary, Discourse Management, and Interactive Communication, plus Global Achievement (B2 First scale). At the top band for B2: “Is intelligible. Intonation is appropriate. Sentence and word stress is accurately placed. Individual sounds are articulated clearly.” (B2 First handbook)

Cambridge says it directly: “You don’t need to have an English accent, but it is important to be clear” (Cambridge English). The goal is not to sound like someone else. The goal is clear, controlled pronunciation that examiners understand without effort.

Why the whole American sound system helps TOEFL listening and IELTS listening

Listening comprehension starts with recognizing sounds. In natural American speech, words do not come one by one. They are linked, reduced and stressed in a pattern:

If a student has trained these sounds and patterns in their own speech, they recognize them faster when they hear them. This is why sound training helps with how to improve English listening skills: students stop translating every word and start hearing meaning in chunks.

The TOEFL Listen and Repeat task shows this connection clearly. ETS explains that the task evaluates the ability to comprehend a spoken sentence and reproduce it accurately: the student must rapidly decode the language and then regenerate it (ETS: Validity by Design). A student who cannot hear the reductions and linking cannot repeat them.

TOEFL and IELTS listening recordings also include British, Australian and New Zealand accents. InPronunci trains General American. But many features students train in InPronunci, such as stress, rhythm, reductions, linking and intonation, are features of connected English speech in general. Students who understand how these features work become more aware listeners in any accent.

Why it helps TOEFL speaking, IELTS speaking, FCE speaking and CAE speaking

Look again at the official criteria. IELTS pronunciation includes rhythm, stress timing, linking, elision, intonation, word stress, and vowel and consonant production. Cambridge pronunciation includes individual sounds, word and sentence stress, and intonation. TOEFL scores intelligible prosody and accurate, intelligible repetition.

These are exactly the parts of the American sound system that InPronunci trains, in order:

Pronunciation also affects other speaking criteria. When students control their sounds, they hesitate less and speak in longer, connected turns, which supports fluency, IELTS Fluency and Coherence, and Cambridge Discourse Management.

TOEFL and IELTS preparation for international students worldwide

InPronunci is used online, so international students can train from any country: on the web, in the Apple App Store and in Google Play. Students preparing to study in the USA come from every language background, and each first language brings its own pronunciation challenges in TOEFL speaking and IELTS speaking. Common examples:

Students from First language Typical challenges in American English
India Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other languages V and W, the American T and D, word stress
China and Taiwan Mandarin Final consonants, TH sounds, the American R and L
Vietnam Vietnamese Final consonants, consonant clusters, sentence stress
Japan and South Korea Japanese, Korean R and L, F and P, adding extra vowels to consonants
Latin America and Spain Spanish Short and long vowels (ship vs. sheep), the schwa, initial S clusters
Brazil and Portugal Portuguese TH sounds, final vowels, the American R
Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the Gulf Arabic P and B, vowel contrasts
Nigeria and West Africa Nigerian English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa TH sounds, vowel contrasts, stress-timed rhythm
Russia, Ukraine and Central Asia Russian TH sounds, W and V, vowel length, intonation
Turkey Turkish TH sounds, W and V, vowel contrasts

InPronunci does not change the program for each country. Every student follows the same sound-by-sound path, and the AI Accent Coach shows each student which sounds need more practice. This is how one program serves TOEFL preparation and IELTS preparation for students worldwide.

InPronunci Method: Prof. Alex’s Interactive Accent Training Path to Fluency

The InPronunci Method is Prof. Alex’s structured interactive American accent training program inside InPronunci, the linguistically structured American Accent Training App he developed. It follows his sound-by-sound path to fluency: every American sound in the course goes through the same steps, from sound development with the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators to phonetic exercises, practice sentences and paragraph practice, including American intonation, emphasis, melody and rhythm.

Students develop and train each sound first, and the evaluation comes after. InPronunci places the student in a student-centered, active role at every step. Because every sound follows the same path, students always know what to practice next, from the first sound to exam-level speech.

Step 1

Develop Each American Sound Before Your Speech Practice

Start with 2D Sound Development to understand how the sound is produced.

At this stage, the student doesn’t just get information.

The student develops the sound with the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators, which train the tongue, lips and jaw to produce it.

This is interactive learning: InPronunci places the student in a student-centered, active role.

Scoring first and then giving information is that traditional approach in digital form.

Step 2

Practice the Sound in Phonetic Exercises

Use phonetic exercises to build steady sound control.

In Practice mode, the student trains the sound and sound combinations with phonetic exercises, guided by Pronunci Instructions at every step.

At this stage, InPronunci uses the shadowing technique: the student speaks along with the model, so the sound becomes natural in the student’s own speech and fluent pronunciation develops.

Step 3

Evaluate Each Sound Before Full Sentences

One sound at a time, learners record the target American sound and receive AI Accent Coach feedback before moving into full sentence practice.

After Practice mode is done, Evaluation mode opens. The AI Accent Coach evaluates the student’s pronunciation of the sound at the phoneme level, to help the student retain the sound system.

The sound is its main task, but it also evaluates intonation, rhythm, melody and word stress, so students receive an accurate score, not just a game-style result.

Beyond the score, the AI Accent Coach and Pronunci Instructions work together to support the student all the way, explaining what went wrong and how to fix it.

Then InPronunci places the student in cognitive accent training: the student listens to My Coach vs My Pronunci and compares the two speech samples. This helps the student start applying critical thinking and improve their speech.

Step 4

Practice the Sound, Intonation and Melody in Sentences

Practice the sound and American Intonation inside real sentence structure.

Training continues with practice sentences.

In Practice mode, InPronunci puts the student back in the shadowing technique, now at the sentence level.

This builds the student’s sound pronunciation, intonation, melody and rhythm together, the way they work in real speech.

Step 5

Evaluate Your Intonation & Connected Speech

Now the AI Accent Coach listens to the full sentence — not just the sound

InPronunci then puts the student in Evaluation mode for the practice sentences, to evaluate their progress. The AI Accent Coach’s main task is the sound of the session. It also evaluates intonation, rhythm, melody and word stress, so students receive an accurate score, not just a game-style result.

The feedback breaks each sentence into words, and each word into sounds and complex sound combinations. The AI Accent Coach highlights all the mistakes in the sentences on one page. For every sound that needs work, Pronunci provides the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulator to train it again.

Then InPronunci places the student in cognitive accent training again: the student listens to My Coach vs My Pronunci for each sentence and compares the two speech samples, applying critical thinking to improve their speech.

Step 6

Practice Your Speech in Paragraphs

Train longer speech, storytelling, and connected speech.

After practice sentences, the student moves on to more serious work: paragraph practice. InPronunci puts the student into the shadowing technique again.

At this stage, the student practices the sounds they learned and the intonation they developed in sentence practice, and starts building public speaking skills.

After the paragraph practice, students review their paragraph evaluation word by word and sound by sound, then move to the next sound and follow the same path again. That is the core of the method: sound-by-sound training.

This path follows the same connected training stages Prof. Alex uses in his 1-on-1 Interactive American Accent Training.

Students follow the sessions in order: Session 2 is the American R and Session 3 is the TH sounds.

How the program is structured

InPronunci contains 25 core sound-training sessions. Each session has 2 parts, and each part has 8 lessons, for 400 structured lessons in total.

The research behind the method

The InPronunci teaching method is grounded in Prof. Alex's doctoral research on interactive foreign-language instruction. In a pedagogical experiment with an experimental group and a control group, students taught through interactive methods scored significantly higher on the English progress test than students taught through traditional, teacher-centered methods. The research is published in Procedia – Social and Behavioral Sciences: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.sbspro.2015.10.047.

InPronunci places the student in a student-centered, active role: instead of passively listening and repeating, students train each American sound with the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators, follow Pronunci Instructions, practice, compare, adjust and practice again.

Student results with Prof. Alex's Interactive American Accent Training

As the research section above explains, Prof. Alex's doctoral research found interactive, student-centered teaching more effective than traditional, teacher-centered teaching. That is why his Interactive American Accent Training is more effective than traditional "listen and repeat" teaching for learning to speak with proper American pronunciation.

Results we see with students of Prof. Alex's 1-on-1 Interactive American Accent Training, shown on MyAccentWay, Prof. Alex's coaching brand (100 = native speaker):

  • Abishek, Tamil and Indian English speaker: 62 → 84 in 9 months
  • Tian, Mandarin speaker: 58 → 85 in 8 months
  • Vlad, Russian speaker: 60 → 83 in 5 months
  • Andrew, Russian speaker: 52 → 76 in 5 months
  • Alain, Nigerian English speaker: 57 → 72 in 8 months

Prof. Alex evaluated both recordings of each student sound by sound. ChatGPT's comparison of the same recordings gave similar scores. These are live results and reviews, not research subjects.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

01

How does InPronunci help with the TOEFL Listen and Repeat task?

The task asks you to repeat short sentences exactly as you hear them. InPronunci trains the same skill: students listen to the coach's model, repeat it, record themselves and compare (My Coach vs My Pronunci).

02

Does pronunciation affect my IELTS speaking score?

Yes. Pronunciation is one of the four equally weighted IELTS Speaking criteria, so it counts for a quarter of the Speaking score (IELTS).

03

What does IELTS pronunciation include?

Chunking, rhythm and stress timing, linking and elision, stress and intonation, word stress, vowel and consonant production, and the effect of accent on intelligibility (IELTS).

04

Do I need an American accent to pass the TOEFL, IELTS, FCE or CAE?

No. These exams assess clear, intelligible pronunciation, not a specific accent. Training the American sound system gives students one complete, consistent model to build clear pronunciation, which is especially useful for students who plan to study in the USA.

05

Can pronunciation training improve my TOEFL listening or IELTS listening?

It can help. Many listening mistakes happen because students do not recognize words in fast, connected speech. When students train sounds, reductions, linking and stress in their own speech, they recognize them faster in recordings.

06

Will InPronunci help with FCE speaking and CAE speaking?

Cambridge assesses individual sounds, word and sentence stress, and intonation. InPronunci trains each of these step by step, from single sounds to paragraphs.

07

I already practice with TOEFL practice tests and IELTS practice tests. Why do I need sound training?

Practice tests show you where you lose points. Sound training builds the skill underneath listening and speaking, so practice tests become more productive.

08

Can I use InPronunci outside the USA?

Yes. InPronunci works online worldwide, on the web, in the Apple App Store and in Google Play, so students can prepare for the TOEFL, IELTS, B2 First or C1 Advanced from any country.

09

Can I start for free?

Yes. Chapter 1: Speech Organs Education is free at learn.inpronunci.com.
