Short answer

Many accent apps play a model, let you repeat it, and then score you. That gives you information, but it doesn’t train your speech. I built InPronunci, an American accent training and pronunciation app, on my interactive teaching method instead: you develop each American sound with the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators, train it with the shadowing technique, and only then get evaluated, sound by sound, from phonetic exercises to sentences and paragraphs. My doctoral research found interactive, student-centered instruction more effective than traditional, teacher-centered instruction.

The problem with accent reduction, accent training, accent modification and pronunciation apps

Many accent reduction, accent training, accent modification and pronunciation apps follow the traditional, teacher-centered approach. Students watch videos of a coach’s mouth, listen to audio models and look at pictures of articulation, then repeat. But watching, listening and looking don’t train the student’s own tongue, lips and jaw. The student hears and sees the sound but still doesn’t know how to make it.

Many of these apps then score the student’s speech after they speak. A score shows that a sound is wrong, but it doesn’t train how to fix it. So the student repeats the same mistake, the score barely changes, and the accent stays the same even after a lot of practice. The problem is in the structure. The key is not the score. The key is to retain the sound, develop it, and be able to use it when you speak.

The psychological problem of learning alone

There is also a psychological problem, and I have seen it again and again in 20 years of teaching. Many students learn alone, or in their own way, or try to become “professional linguists” themselves. They go for free content, thinking: “If I know how to pronounce the sound, I will succeed.” Unfortunately, the truth is that you won’t, not by knowing alone. Knowing how a sound is made and being able to say it in real speech are two different skills. Only guided training connects them. Without an accent coach to guide them, students see a low score, read “try again,” and repeat the sound without knowing what to change. After many failed tries, motivation drops and frustration grows. Many give up before their accent changes.

My seven years of doctoral research show why guidance matters. I identified four conditions for effective interactive teaching. One of them is building the student’s positive motivation. Another is changing the teacher’s role from the only leader in the room to an organizer and partner who works together with the student. Traditional teaching follows the authoritarian model, the opposite of interactive teaching: the teacher leads, and the student follows instructions and struggles alone. In interactive teaching, the student is active and guided. In my experience, that is what keeps motivation alive, because students’ effort shows in their speaking and they start seeing the value.

Many students come to me after using well-known, popular apps, with one question: “I have trained so much and completed the program, but I don’t sound closer to what I wanted.” Many of them have become skeptical about accent apps. That is what I call being burned out on the wrong method.

How I built my interactive teaching method into the InPronunci pronunciation app

I designed the InPronunci pronunciation app based on my interactive teaching method, not on a scoring method. AI alone won’t change a student’s accent. What changes it is a clear path, followed step by step.

In many accent and pronunciation apps, the student speaks first, gets a score, and then reads feedback on the mistakes. In my view, that is the traditional, authoritarian model of teaching moved into the digital learning world. The student gets information but doesn’t really practice or improve.

So yes, InPronunci has an evaluation too. The difference is not whether there is a score. The difference is what comes before it: in InPronunci, the student develops and trains the sound first, and the evaluation comes last. Every sound follows the same path.

The InPronunci Interactive Accent Training Path: A Sound-by-Sound Teaching Method to Start Speaking English Fluently

Step 1

Develop Each American Sound Before Your Speech Practice

Start with 2D Sound Development to understand how the sound is produced.

At this stage, the student doesn’t just get information.

The student develops the sound with the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators, which train the tongue, lips and jaw to produce it.

This is interactive learning: InPronunci places the student in a student-centered, active role, which my doctoral research found more effective than traditional, teacher-centered instruction.

Scoring first and then giving information is that traditional approach in digital form.

Step 2

Practice the Sound in Phonetic Exercises

Use phonetic exercises to build steady sound control.

In Practice mode, the student trains the sound and sound combinations with phonetic exercises, guided by Pronunci Instructions at every step.

At this stage, InPronunci uses the shadowing technique: the student speaks along with the model, so the sound becomes natural in the student’s own speech and fluent pronunciation develops.

Step 3

Evaluate Each Sound Before Full Sentences

One sound at a time, learners record the target American sound and receive AI Accent Coach feedback before moving into full sentence practice.

After Practice mode is done, Evaluation mode opens. The AI Accent Coach evaluates the student’s pronunciation of the sound at the phoneme level, to help the student retain the sound system.

The sound is its main task, but it also evaluates intonation, rhythm, melody and word stress, so students receive an accurate score, not just a game-style result.

Beyond the score, the AI Accent Coach and Pronunci Instructions work together to support the student all the way, explaining what went wrong and how to fix it.

Then InPronunci places the student in cognitive accent training: the student listens to My Coach vs My Pronunci and compares the two speech samples. This helps the student start applying critical thinking and improve their speech.

Step 4

Practice the Sound, Intonation and Melody in Sentences

Practice the sound and American Intonation inside real sentence structure.

Training continues with practice sentences.

In Practice mode, InPronunci puts the student back in the shadowing technique, now at the sentence level.

This builds the student’s sound pronunciation, intonation, melody and rhythm together, the way they work in real speech.

Step 5

Evaluate Your Intonation & Connected Speech

Now the AI Accent Coach listens to the full sentence — not just the sound

InPronunci then puts the student in Evaluation mode for the practice sentences, to evaluate their progress. The AI Accent Coach’s main task is the sound of the session. It also evaluates intonation, rhythm, melody and word stress, so students receive an accurate score, not just a game-style result.

The feedback breaks each sentence into words, and each word into sounds and complex sound combinations. The AI Accent Coach highlights all the mistakes in the sentences on one page. For every sound that needs work, Pronunci provides the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulator to train it again.

Then InPronunci places the student in cognitive accent training again: the student listens to My Coach vs My Pronunci for each sentence and compares the two speech samples, applying critical thinking to improve their speech.

Step 6

Practice Your Speech in Paragraphs

Train longer speech, storytelling, and connected speech.

After practice sentences, the student moves on to more serious work: paragraph practice. InPronunci puts the student into the shadowing technique again.

At this stage, the student practices the sounds they learned and the intonation they developed in sentence practice, and starts building public speaking skills.

Step 7

Review Your Feedback Word-by-Word Sound-by-Sound

Real sentence pronunciation — not dictionary pronunciation

Paragraph evaluation is more advanced. Here too, the AI Accent Coach evaluates the sound of the session first, along with intonation, rhythm, melody and word stress.

The evaluation breaks the paragraph into sentences, sentences into words, and words into sounds and sound combinations.

Mistakes are corrected along the same path as in the sentence evaluation, including cognitive accent training with My Coach vs My Pronunci.

Step 8

Move to the Next Sound

The student moves on to the next sound and follows the same path again. That is the core of the method: sound-by-sound training.

Prof. Alex Note

Most students don’t know how to start speaking fluently. They chase grammar and vocabulary, thinking, “I need more words to be fluent.” I’ll be honest with y’all: another 2,000 words won’t make you fluent. Phonetics will. When students retain the sound system, they start understanding better, their listening and pronunciation skills improve, and they become fluent. The sooner students understand that, the sooner they start working on it.

Real students, real results

My doctoral research shows that the interactive method is more effective than traditional, teacher-centered instruction. My students show what that method achieves in practice. The results below come from the InPronunci Premium Plan, which combines 1-on-1 training with me and daily practice in InPronunci, so they are not app-only results. Scores are on a scale from 0 to 100, where 100 = native speaker.

Who InPronunci is for: worldwide and in the United States

InPronunci is a pronunciation app for iPhone, Android and computer, so non-native English speakers can train their American accent from any country. Many of my students are international professionals, students and immigrants who live in the United States or work with American colleagues and clients. Wherever you live, the path is the same: develop each American sound, train it with the shadowing technique, and get evaluated last.

Questions & Answers

FAQ

01

Is InPronunci more effective than other accent apps?

InPronunci was built on Prof. Alex’s interactive teaching method, which his doctoral research found more effective than traditional, teacher-centered instruction (published research). The comparison is between methods and technology: InPronunci places the student in a student-centered, active role. Students develop each American sound with the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators, train it with the shadowing technique, and are evaluated last, sound by sound, from phonetic exercises to sentences and paragraphs.

02

Does the InPronunci pronunciation app score my pronunciation like other apps?

Yes, InPronunci has an evaluation, but it comes last. Students first develop and train each sound, then the AI Accent Coach evaluates the sound, intonation, rhythm, melody and word stress, and Pronunci Instructions explain how to fix each mistake.

03

How does InPronunci use the shadowing technique?

InPronunci uses the shadowing technique three times in each sound’s path: with phonetic exercises, with practice sentences, and with practice paragraphs. The student speaks along with the model, building pronunciation, intonation, melody and rhythm step by step.

04

Will learning more vocabulary make me fluent?

According to Prof. Alex, more words alone won’t make you fluent. Phonetics will: when students retain the American sound system, their listening and pronunciation improve, and fluency follows.
